Hart Media Distribution Lab (MDL): Our Collection

The Hart Media Distribution lab has nearly 10,000 non-print items in its permanent collection. In addition, we offer non-print reserve services for course related materials. Please refer to "Placing material on Quarterly Reserve" for more information.

Permanent Collection

Permanent materials are owned by the University and housed in the Hart Media Distribution Lab. These materials are usually acquired through undergraduate academic grants (see UIIP Minigrants at http://trc.ucdavis.edu/trc/grants/faculty/index.html).

Materials can also be donated to the media collection. If you would like to donate items, please contact the .

The video database at http://video.ucdavis.edu allows searching through all permanent materials. The types of materials in the permanent collection are listed below:

  • VHS: Most of our VHS video collection is located in 1101 Hart and can be checked out immediately. However, due to space constraints, videos not checked out within the last five years have been moved to an off-site archive. Please place reservations 48 hours prior to the desired pickup date to ensure the availability of the video.

  • DVD: All of our DVDs are located in 1101 Hart Hall.

  • Umatic: Some of our collection is in the older Umatic format. Locally produced content in Umatic format may be eligible for conversion to VHS and available for checkout. Please contact the for more information. Once the Umatic has been converted, the VHS copy will remain in the collection at 1101 Hart Hall.

  • Tutorials: There are some VHS tutorials and software manuals available at 1101 Hart Hall. These items are not currently maintained, so the latest software versions may not be available.

  • Miscellaneous: We maintain a limited assortment of slide sets, multimedia modules, and CDs in our collection.
