To help ensure that the Hart Media Distribution Lab complies with all requirements of the Copyright Law of the United States, the following procedures are applied by the Hart MDL when determining material to accept into the Quarterly Reserve collection. The University provides several resources to help faculty understand copyright. Please see below for more information.
Quarterly Reserve Materials
- All material must be legally acquired. Only material that is a legal copy will be accepted.
- Items that appear to be non-original content are subject to approval by the Lab Manager. Such items will not be available for checkout until the item(s) can be reviewed. Instructors may be required to provide written permission from the copyright holder and/or complete and sign the University's "Certification Regarding Instructional Use of Copyright-Protected Material" form to be kept on file at the Hart MDL.
Note that "fair use" guidelines may be different for audiovisual and multimedia material than for print material. Please review Section 110(1) of Title 17 USC for guidelines in using audiovisual materials.
Note on Rented Videos:
Rented videos (from Blockbuster, NetFlix, etc.) cannot necessarily be used in the same way as legally acquired, personal videos. The rental companies often state in their terms and conditions that their videos are for personal and non-commercial use. Therefore, the Hart MDL will not accept items from these companies for Quarterly Reserve.
Note on recorded TV shows:
