Hart Media Distribution Lab (MDL): About Us

Computer Lab Management (CLM) operates two specialized computer rooms in Hart Hall:

  • 1101 Hart Hall - the Media Distribution Lab for UC Davis, and
  • 1102 Hart Hall - a 25-seat multimedia computer classroom.

Both the Hart MDL and its computer classroom provide a variety of services to support and supplement instruction. The following sections describe some of our services.

HOURS: Please refer to the Computer Rooms Guide for our hours of operation.

For more details or questions, please feel free to contact the .

The Hart Hall Media Distribution Lab provides:

  • Convenient access to nearly 10,000 audiovisual materials for academic instruction,
  • Easy-to-use equipment for viewing instructional materials, and
  • Quarterly Reserve video material for student viewing.

Traditional Instructional Material Collections

The Hart MDL is the campus central repository for nearly 10,000 non-print media materials. Our collection includes DVDs, VHS tapes, audiotapes, and other materials used for instruction. These materials are available to faculty for classroom instruction and also to students for viewing within the lab.

The Hart MDL permanent video collection can be searched at http://video.ucdavis.edu. Reservations for in-class, instructional viewings can also be made at this site.

Notice of Change to the Lecture Recording Service
Beginning Fall 2006, a digital lecture recording service will replace the audio tape service. All lecture rooms that currently have a cassette recorder will also have a digital recorder. The Hart MDL will accept cassette recordings only to serve as backups to the digital recordings. For more information about using the new digital lecture recording service, please see http://podcast.ucdavis.edu.

Digital Instructional Material Collections

The Hart MDL also has ten iMac computer stations with dozens of multimedia instructional modules, other digital class materials such as slide sets, and access to educational web sites. The multimedia modules cover courses in Applied Behavioral Sciences, Botany, Chemistry, Human Anatomy, Linguistics, Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, Physics, and Wildlife and Fisheries Biology, and more.

The multimedia modules give students active control of the learning process. Students can access the material in any order; for example, they can replay audio descriptions, watch and pause slide shows, and view extra textual content for images.

For faculty interested in creating their own multimedia material, Computer Lab Management offers a multimedia development environment in the Meyer Media Lab. Please see Meyer Media Lab information page for more information.

For faculty interested in professional audiovisual production, please contact Mediaworks for more information.

Multimedia Computer Classroom

1102 Hart Hall is a 25-seat computer classroom focused on specialized multimedia and design instruction. The classroom was designed to provide instructors a place to provide practical, workplace computer skills to their students.

The classroom features high-end, Dual-Core Intel Xeon computers with large LCD displays, peripherals such as flatbed scanners and a film scanner, and specialized multimedia creation software, such as

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver and Flash)
  • Audacity
  • Bryce 3D
  • Cinema Tools
  • Final Cut Studio
  • VectorWorks
  • Maya

Multimedia Computer Classroom Annex

Since the 1102 Hart classroom is reserved with classes most of the day, the MDL offers the Hart Annex−−a semi-private computer room where students can complete homework and class projects.

The Annex features two Dual-Core Intel Xeon computers with LCD displays, one flatbed scanner, and a film scanner. These computers have the same specialized software as the systems in 1102 Hart. Please note, Microsoft Office is not installed on the Annex computers and they only access ".edu" web sites.

Students enrolled in classes held in 1102 Hart can reserve an Annex computer by calling the Hart MDL at 752-2911. Walk-in reservations are also available.

Other Computing Services

Quick Access and Open Access Computing Stations

In order to provide additional, open access computers near the core of campus, 17 open access computers are installed in Hart 1101. Eight of these stations are for Quick Access and have a 10-minute time limit. Students use these systems to access the Internet, read email, edit and print papers, or print online instructional materials. These stations supplement Hart's primary multimedia mission.
